Massachusetts Resources

1) Statewide help & navigation (start here)

  • Massachusetts Behavioral Health Help Line (BHHL) — 24/7 clinical triage and connection to services (mental health + SUD). Call/Text 833-773-2445 or chat online.

2) Find certified sober homes (directories & operators)

  • MASH – Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (state’s recognized certifier). Find MASH-certified residences and operator contacts. Phone: 781-472-2624. Address: 5 Edgell Rd, Ste 30, Framingham, MA 01701.
    • FYI: MA state agencies and vendors refer only to MASH-certified sober homes.
  • Oxford House (peer-run, self-supported homes) — MA locations statewide; use the Oxford House site to locate vacancies or call national. Main: (301) 587-2916 / (800) 689-6411. Example MA home: Oxford House Hooper St., 68 Hooper St, Chelsea, MA 02150, (617) 466-0929.

3) Funding & financial assistance (public + nonprofit)

Use these in combination; most programs require you to choose a MASH-certified home.

A) State/official programs

  • Project NORTH (Navigation, Outreach, Recovery, Treatment & Hope)short-term sober-house rent assistance in certified/participating homes for court-involved individuals (current or recent). Ask a treatment provider, Probation, defense attorney, or the court to refer you; not self-referral for housing funds. Active in multiple Trial Court locations (e.g., Boston, Worcester, Springfield, etc.).
  • MASH Rental Assistance Program (RAP) — limited rental help administered by MASH; call to check current availability and eligibility. Phone: 781-472-2624.
  • Recovery Housing Program (RHP) — federal funds administered by MA to support transitional recovery housing; availability varies by local implementation. Ask your local housing authority or regional administering agency how RHP is operating in your area.
  • RAFT (Residential Assistance for Families in Transition) — emergency rent help (not recovery-specific) that can sometimes bridge move-in or rent gaps if you’re otherwise eligible. Apply via the RAFT portal/RAAs.

B) Other small pots & leads (verify current status)

  • Local/municipal or county re-entry & recovery grants (varies by region). Ask the BHHL or HelplineMA navigators to surface any current local funds tied to MASH homes; programs open/close frequently.

4) Faith-based recovery housing & programs (MA)

  • The Salvation Army — Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC), Saugus
    209 Broadway (Route 1), Saugus, MA 01906. Phone: (781) 231-0803. Residential faith-based work-therapy program with recovery supports.
  • Adult & Teen Challenge Massachusetts (New England & NJ Region)

  • Boston Rescue Mission — faith-rooted organization with recovery programs and sober housing supports; contact for current bed types/availability: 39 Kingston St, Boston, MA 02111, (617) 338-9000.
  • Catholic Charities & parish-based recovery supports — not always housing, but strong case management, stabilization help, and connections to sober homes; ask local office for recovery housing referrals. (Use HelplineMA/BHHL to pinpoint programs near you.)

5) Notable MA recovery-home operators (examples)

These operate MASH-certified recovery homes or residential recovery programs—contact directly for openings and payment options:

  • Gavin Foundation (Boston area recovery homes & programs).
  • Victory Programs (e.g., Joelyn’s and other recovery housing).
  • Casa Esperanza (bilingual, culturally specific programs & housing in Boston).

How to move quickly (step-by-step)

  1. Call HelplineMA (800-327-5050) or BHHL (833-773-2445). Tell them you need sober living in a MASH-certified home and ask about current funding (Project NORTH, RAP, RAFT, local grants).
  2. Pick a certified home using the MASH directory; confirm weekly fee, intake requirements, curfew, and house rules.
  3. Apply for funding:
    • If you’re court-involved, ask Probation/court navigator to refer you to Project NORTH for sober-house rent help.
    • Call MASH (781-472-2624) to ask about RAP availability.
    • If needed, file a RAFT application for emergency rent assistance.
  4. If faith-based is preferred, contact Salvation Army ARC (Saugus) or Adult & Teen Challenge (Brockton) while you pursue funding.
